Avalanche dethrone two-time defending champions in Tampa with 4-2 series victory

Kadri scores, MacKinnon and Lehkonen contribute as Avs win in six

The Colorado Avalanche have dethroned the two-time defending champion Tampa Bay Lightning, winning the Stanley Cup with a 2-1 victory in Game 6 on Sunday night. The Avalanche won the series 4-2, their first Stanley Cup since 2001.

Nazem Kadri scored the winning goal in the second period, assisted by Cale Makar and Devon Toews. Mikko Rantanen scored the other goal for Colorado, while Darcy Kuemper made 22 saves in net.

The Lightning got their lone goal from Steven Stamkos in the first period. Andrei Vasilevskiy made 34 saves for Tampa Bay.

The Avalanche's victory is their third Stanley Cup in franchise history. They also won the Cup in 1996 and 2001.
